Job Description

Utah Valley University School of the Arts is seeking a Costume Manager to oversee all costumes for the Dance, Music, and Theatre department productions, visiting touring productions, and The Noorda Center productions. We are seeking a highly organized individual with proven management and leadership experience in professional costume construction and design for theater, opera, and/or dance. The ideal candidate will bring expertise from the field as well as a passion for training and instruction. This position works directly with student employees and untrained lab students of all skill levels supporting UVU\x92s mission in providing engaged learning opportunities through work experience.,

Essential functions include, but are not limited to:,
Management:,
Hires, trains, and supervises shop personnel, including full and part time staff, student labor, and work-study students. Assigns workload and duties as necessary. Manages payroll and leave requests.,

Manages departmental material and labor operating budgets.,
,
Supervises hair, wig, and makeup needs by hiring personnel and purchasing supplies as needed.,
,
Maintains a safe, clean, organized, working shop; orders sewing supplies and notions, accessories, and costume pieces.,
,
Maintains, cleans and makes basic repairs on sewing machines, industrial irons and steamers; keeps an up-to-date collection of costume sources and catalogs.,

Maintains the costume collection; sorts, labels, sizes, organizes, and inventories the collection.,
,
Supervises costume loans and returns.,

Production:,
,
Consults with design teams on the feasibility of designs to determine what will be built, purchased, thrifted, borrowed, rented, or taken from stock. Assists the design team in pulling, renting, shopping etc. as appropriate for the needs of the show.,

Produces estimates for materials and labor in response to designs and one-off requests. Maintains updated expenses ensuring productions stay within approved budgetary parameters.,

Updates the production team regularly and attends design and production meetings as well as rehearsals when appropriate.,
,
Trains staff and students in basic and advanced sewing and costuming skills to ultimately translate design renderings and technical drawings into three-dimensional costume form. Skills include creating patterns, cutting, draping, pattering, dying, assembly etc. Assigns hands-on projects for students in production labs.,

Coordinates performance fittings and alterations.,
,
Coordinates and trains show wardrobe crew with Noorda Center Production Management for dress rehearsals and performances.,

Assists design team in demonstrations, lectures, or other projects on campus or in the community.,

Serves as a costume consultant for design students, student projects.,
,
Adapts to extremely variable hours (may include evenings, nights and weekends).,
