The Gateway Performing Arts Center of Suffolk County is seeking a full-time COSTUME SHOP ASISTANT for its 2020 season. The Gateway Performing Arts Center of Suffolk County is a professional non-profit theater located roughly 55 miles east of New York City on Long Island in Bellport, NY. We work in two main theaters, the Gateway Playhouse, our 500-seat home theater, and the Patchogue Theater for the Performing Arts, the 1200-seat road house, where we present at least two shows in each season. On-site housing is provided. Gateway will also assist with transportation to and from its location in New York. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:,
,
\x95 Assist the Shop Manager in all activities and safety of the Wardrobe Department,
\x95 Assist the Shop Manager in the construction, altering, pulling, fitting, and strike of costume elements for All mainstage shows, Children\x92s Theater shows, and our Haunt ,
\x95 Assist the Shop Manager in supervising the Costume Shop Crew ,
\x95 Act as the lead stitcher for each production,
\x95 Run shows as needed (not typical during the Summer Season),
\x95 Train Interns and Apprentices, in conjunction with the Shop Manager,
\x95Extensive knowledge of costume construction, fabrication techniques; knowledge of cutting, draping and patterning, costume and fashion history ,
\x95 Maintain a safe, secure, clean organized office, shop and work space,

Qualifications:,

\x95 Prior Shop Assistant experience a plus,
\x95Extensive knowledge of costume construction, fabrication techniques; knowledge of cutting, draping and patterning, costume and fashion history ,
\x95 Maintain a positive attitude during stressful moments,
\x95 Ability to run a crew, working on multiple projects at one time,
\x95 Capacity to solve problems,
\x95 Good communication skills,
\x95 Excellent time management skills,
\x95 Basic understanding of building corsetry,
\x95 Ability to properly tailor and hem a suit,
\x95 Knowledge on quick rigging garments,
\x95 Use of an industrial sewing machine, serger, household sewing machines, Blind hemmer a plus,
\x95 Hand stitching techniques including but not limited to,
-Proficiency in Blind hemming,
-Catch stitch,
-Basic embroidery techniques,
\x95 Darning,
\x95 Understanding of the artistic process,
\x95 Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others,
\x95 Ability to prioritize, multi-task and work quickly and accurately with attention to detail,
\x95 Driver\x92s license a plus,
