Job Description

Job Summary: The Scenic Charge Artist will support all productions through consultation with the Technical Director, both Scenic and Lighting designers and occasionally the Director/Stage Manager and determine painting processes to achieve the appropriate finished look for each scenic piece. ,

The responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:,

Scenic Charge Responsibilities: ,
,
\x95Work as the primary artist on the scenic requirements of all productions while utilizing Over-hire Scenic Artists as needed per production.,
\x95Participation in the production process to further interdepartmental collaboration and the artistic vision of the production.,
\x95Through consultation with the Technical Director determine staffing needs within an established budget; including hiring and evaluation of personnel as needed.,
\x95Stay informed of health and safety issues regarding materials and equipment.,
\x95Conduct tests and provide samples for approval by Scenic and Lighting Designers as well as production team to determine appropriate painting processes.,
\x95Collaborate with the Technical Director to project cost and schedule painting of scenery, set properties, trim properties and occasionally hand properties.,
\x95Paint and/or supervise all aspects of paint process from lay-in through completion and assume responsibility for the timely completion of work within budgeted limitations.,
\x95Coordinate distribution of work among various spaces through consultation with the Technical Director.,
\x95Attend production meetings, technical note sessions, and rehearsals as deemed necessary by the Technical Director.,
\x95Create and/or assist in the creation of digital images that meet format requirements for large- and small-scale printing.,
\x95Maintain a safe and clean work environment in all shops, theatres and designated paint spaces.,
\x95Responsible for maintenance and inventory of equipment and other supplies.,
\x95Create a show morgue of all shows.,
\x95Assist other departments as time and production needs demand.,
\x95Maintain an environment of respect to all staff, guest artists, stakeholders, community leaders, and vendors.,
\x95Carry out other duties and responsibilities that may be assigned by direct supervisor or management. ,

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:,
,
\x95Extensive knowledge of theatrical paints, dyes, box store paints, and scenic painting techniques.,
\x95An understanding of theatrical design processes. ,
\x95Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. ,
\x95Ability to appropriately prioritize.,
\x95Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, and reposition large objects weighing up to 50 pounds either alone or with a team.,
\x95Comfortable working on ladders, mechanical lifts or other high places.,
\x95Ability to comfortable work in confined spaces.,
\x95Ability to repeatedly squat, crawl, walk, crouch, and kneel.,
\x95Ability to work as a team member and maintain a positive attitude in stressful situations.,
\x95Ability to unite and collaborate with staff, guest artists, stakeholders, community leaders, and vendors.,

Work Conditions: ,
\x95 Ability to work long hours and work with a flexible schedule. ,
\x95 May have to work at heights, around moving machinery, and with exposure to noise, vibration, and dust. ,
\x95 Must be willing to travel and work at various sites. ,
\x95 Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions while using the appropriate safety procedures. ,
\x95 Ability to work safely in an environment containing potentially hazardous electrical equipment, fumes, and/or materials. ,

Physical Demands: ,
\x95 This position may move/carry theatrical scenery, wood and steel deliveries, load scenery onto and off trucks weighing up to 50 pounds. ,
\x95 This position will need to frequently communicate with staff in a noisy shop and theater environment. ,
\x95 This position will need to ascend/descend machinery used and scenery created for the production. ,

Minimum Qualifications:,
,
\x95Four (4) years of professional experience.,
\x95Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator or other imaging software.,
\x95Must work a flexible schedule which includes some evenings and weekends.,
,
Preferred Qualifications: ,
,
\x95Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Theatre. ,
\x95Three (3) years of supervisory experience.,
\x95Experience working in a scene shop at a regional theatre.,
\x95Understanding of AutoCAD, Vectorworks, or other CAD software.,
\x95Ability to work well with people.,
\x95Has personal and professional integrity and an exemplary work ethic.,
\x95A supporter of Artisan Center Theater and its guiding principles.,
\x95Excellent organizational skills; ability to multitask, track multiple projects.,
\x95Excellent written and oral communication skills.,
\x95Makes good use of time.,
\x95Has a positive can-do attitude and is a team player.,
